This extension is allowed users to see changes between different streams in the same module in the mini dashboard of the user. It is allowed to accept or refuse these changes in your or the other streams. Streams are compared instantly and all of them. Users have the ability to mark the checkboxes of each artifact and this artifact is compared automatically with other streams

In many cases users would like to have a variant management using several streams. This means that a requirement can exist in several streams with different requirements, text or attributes. This Add-on is useful for clients with enabled Global configuration management in DNG.
The add-on is used mainly in companies with many similar versions of the products where the streams need to be managed efficiently and quickly.

User interface

Description

This extension is intended to show a user a quick overview of the module base on the attribute that users choose for the generation of the chart only two parameters are required; artifact type + any attribute

Problem to solve

This extension is used to get a quick overview of the module without JRS application. It also automatically detects module global configuration and allows users to jump between the modules and get an overview with minimal setup requirements. This extension is usually needed by requirements engineers and managers who need the visual status of the module.

Features

Show visual pie chart

Users can choose artifact type and attribute from the dropdown and generate a chart. Currently, only one artifact type per chart is possible.

If you are looking for something that can filter certain artifacts in a module that contains many other unused artifacts, this extension is made for you. This extension allows users to show evaluate logical formulas to process relevant artifacts. This artifact is then copied or reused to the second module according to user specifications.

Explanation and features

  • Allows the user to filter specific artifacts based on logical formulas
  • Allows a user to enter and process logical formulas to filter relevant artifacts
  • Users can anytime reset logical results to default values
  • User can choose result module, where he wants to show filtered artifacts

Restrictions:

  • Requires to be executed in the module. If a user tries to start the script outside of the module it will not work and the message will be displayed advising the user to work from the module.

How to use this extension

All you will need is an attribute in which you'll have the "rule(s)", view(s) with the filter, and attribute for filtering the artifacts. "Formula" (it can be called however you want) is a string data type attribute. It is defining the certain rule(s) of filtering the artifacts in the module.

SpecGeneratorWidget

As you can see in the picture widget extension contains categories with questions.  In front of every question is a "question identifier". This identifier is used to recognize the question in the "Formula" attribute.

"Formula" string has a format of excel function:

[function]([question identifier]="[possible answer]")

Example:

IF(Q1="B") - this means that the artifact is relevant for the document (module) if question number 1 is set to value B in the widget.

"Relevant" - boolean data type attribute used for filtering the artifacts. Its default value is "true" because at the beginning we need all artifacts in the view. This attribute is automatically filled by an extension.

"View" - view with filter for "true" value of "Relevant" attribute.

Filtering the Artifacts

Fiter Module Button

If you want to filter the artifacts in the module based on rules, you must have set up all the things from the "Preparation" section. After that, click "Filter module". The extension will check the "Formula" attribute, compare them with the values that you defined in the widget, and based on the result it will make the "Relevant" attribute "true" or "false".

SpecGeneratorCheckingAttributes

Generating Documents

Generate Document Button

Generating Documents is the process of copying/reusing (for a better explanation of Reusing options in DOORS NG visit our Reuse Concepts and Options in DOORS Next Generation article) artifacts from the "master" module to the newly created module. The extension can copy also the artifact links.

By default, the extension is reusing "Heading" artifacts and copying all others. But it has also advanced options. In this setting, all Artifact Types are loaded in the currently opened module and you can choose if the artifacts should be reused or copied.

Additional Options

After you click the "Generate Document" button, you will be prompted to select the destination module from the "Module Picker"

Module Picker

and the process of reusing and copying is started.

Reset Relevant

Reset Relevant Button

This option will set the "true" value in the "Relevant" attribute for all artifacts in the module.

Possible Usecases

  • Generate Specifications with a subset of requirements based on your answered questions.
  • Create RFP requests based on the product, country, delivery partner, or any other need.
  • Generate Responses to RFP based on your customer requests and filter your product option based on complex dependencies.

For completeness, the DNG public API's that are available are:

  • RDNG Reportable API - extracting read only information from RDNG generally for creating custom reports to be run from DNG or RPE. As well, it can be used in a lot of custom applications interacting with RDNG. Big advantage of this API is its simplicity and great performance if you need to work with big amounts of data. Sometimes it's called as RDNG Reportable REST API.
  • OSLC RM V2 API - the open standard way to programmatically integrate with DOORS Next Generation, there is an elaborate workshop to get you started here OSLC Workshop article. These programs can be from any language that supports various HTTP methods of requests, e.g. Java, C# etc. Hence these are more flexible to run and can read and update DNG data, as part of a web server, or standalone, but have some limitations set by the current OSLC standard, for example module support. In release 6.0.5 extension have been added for modules. It's very powerful tool to work with RDNG data including capabilities of data modification but can be a little bit more complex in use than other ways.
  • TRS 2.0 - the OSLC Tracked Resource Set open standard REST API to hook into the stream of low level changes done to resources in the DNG application (and other Jazz apps as well); read only.
  • RM API - it's realized in client extension capability that is accessible from Rational DOORS Next Generation. This is Javascript extension framework that generally can be added as widgets which you can run from the dashboard, and can be used to view and edit DNG data. The widgets are developed in accordance to OpenSocial standard (based on Google Gadget framework). It's more tailored to DNG, so has better module support, but is limited to be run in a browser/javascript environment. It's very easy to make an automation of your work in this way. You can do a lot of interesting tricks with currently open Web page based on DOM/XML standards. You can add support of many popular libraries such as JQuery and so on. But this big simplicity results in some constraint in implementation. For example, you can easily access RDNG artifacts in current module or collection as well as access any selected artifacts but there are some difficulties if you need access artifacts in current view or currently available on the page. But use RM API together with other APIs described above can allow you do stunning things with RDNG.
